There were days when all Luna wanted to do was look at the flowers growing in the herbology gardens. Today was one of those days, although she would quickly admit that every day was the same. She was never in the mood to turn down a trip to the gardens, where she could sit back and smell the flowers that were blooming and watch them as they changed colors and took shapes. She even liked to watch the mean plants. She didn't agree with their behavior, of course! But, she liked to watch them. Everything in nature was a shock to her and every new moment was a surprise.
She had ventured out of the castle after lunch, heading for the gardens. She didn't know if there was a class going on today, and she hoped not - she didn't want to intrude upon a professor's lesson. Even though she'd love to sit in and listen, she knew it wouldn't be the most kind thing to do. To her relief, though, there was no one at the garden and she quickly made her way to a small stool next to a bunch of daisies and roses. She loved these flowers. Maybe they were the cliche romance flowers, but Luna didn't mind. She did like romance, even if it never happened to her.
Pulling out her journal, she sat down on the stool and watched the flowers. She hoped a butterfly would come and land on one so she could write about it. She planned on making a book about nature. She knew enough about animals and plants to put together a little notebook of facts, but she needed to experience them more in person before she could consider publishing her thoughts.
She sat, her head tilted to the side as her eyes stared at the plants. Her mind was wondering off into space, as usual, the dreamy look taking over her expressions. She crossed her legs, the long flowing skirt she was wearing now spilling into the grass as she watched nature unfold before her.

The weather was nice the morning that Ginny woke up in her Gryffindor common room. She had fallen asleep on the couch by the fireplace the night before, reading the Daily Prophet. She had been hearing worrisome things about the magic world and feared for her family back home, so her parents had been sending the newspaper to her every day as reassurance. The sun was poking through the blinds of the room, causing her to toss about until finally giving in to the rays. It didn’t take her long to dress, she wasn’t too concerned with appearance on a day like this. There was no class and she had nowhere to be, so she expected to run into no one.
She pulled her long red hair back into a ponytail, securing it with a small clip she found on her rommate’s bed. She hadn’t brought much with her, and thankfully her housemates were willing to share. She’d return the favor, of course, by providing her roommate with something from Fred and George’s prank shop. Some love potion, maybe. The girls here were always crazy about love potion. She knew someone who fancied Ron quite a bit and had been begging for the potion, but Ginny was strongly against giving someone an aid to liking her own brother. Especially Ron.
“Good morning,” she nodded her head in greeting to several familiar faces as she passed through the hallways, heading outside. She wanted to spend at least a few minutes out here today. It wasn’t common to have such a beautiful day at Hogwarts and she wasn’t going to miss it. She decided the flowers probably needed watering, and if the herbology professor noticed someone had cared for the plants, Ginny might just get extra points in her class. She was never one to avoid a chance at superior grades; schoolwork was priority for the Weasley girl.
She squinted her eyes as she walked, trying to make out the fuzzy image of someone sitting on the stool near the flowers. She wondered if it was the professor and was about to turn back, not wanting to disturb the wizard. But as soon as she noticed the long blond hair and lost expression on the stranger’s face, Ginny instantly recognized one of her best friends. “Luna!” she called happily, waving her hand in the air. She hurried over to her friend and took a seat in the grass next to her, squirming at the feeling of the morning’s dew seeping into her robe. “It’s a lovely day, isn’t it?” she asked her friend, watching as Luna came back from her mind’s space traveling. “Are you caring for the plants?”

It took Luna a few moments before she realized that there was someone sitting next to her. She was happily off in her own world, and if it weren't for the familiar voice of her beloved friend breaking into that world, she may not have ever come back from it. Which Luna believed probably wasn't a bad thing, when you really think about it.
"Oh hello Ginny," she said calmly when she noticed the red-haired girl sit down next to her. "I'm so glad you came." She spoke as if she was on a cloud, light and soft. Her eyes were always dreaming of something she couldn't see in real life, and it was constantly apparent on her otherwise plain face. She smiled down at her friend, placing her hand on Ginny's shoulder and giving it a thankful squeeze to let her know she appreciated her presence. Ginevra was Luna's best friend and she would likely be completely lost without someone as stable as Ginny. Luna didn't get on with too many people at this school due to the fact that not everyone was kind enough to give her a chance.
"Yes, I'm watching them grow," she nodded her head proudly. "Professor Trelawney didn't ask me to, but I don't think she'll mind." She glanced down at her friend and tilted her head in question, "do you think she will?" She couldn't imagine why anyone would have a problem with someone looking after their plants. After all, Luna was very certain that plants needed love and attention one hundred percent of the time or they would wither away. "The plants are like people, you know," she suggested as she watched one of the daises sway back and forth in the light wind. "They need people to look out for them or they may not survive."
